DREM releases the transport statistics for the third quarter of 2023, along with a time series covering the period from 1976 to 2022
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today data for the first nine months of 2023 regarding the different modes of transport.
Land transport - Passengers carried by buses and cable cars in the 3rd quarter of 2022 grew year-on-year
According to data compiled by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), public passenger transport by bus recorded a total of 20.0 million passengers from January to September 2023, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 10.5%. Urban lines transported 12.8 million passengers (a 12.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022), while interurban lines saw 7.2 million passengers (a 7.1% increase compared to the previous year). In the third quarter of 2023, buses transported 6.6 million passengers (an 8.8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year), with 4.2 million on urban lines (an 8.6% increase) and 2.4 million on interurban lines (a 9.1% increase).
During the first nine months of 2023, over 1,057.0 thousand tickets for cable cars were sold, representing a 33.5% increase compared to the same period in 2022 and a 45.9% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2019. Of these, 93.2% were sold to adults, 4.6% to children, and the remaining 2.2% to other user categories (e.g., farmers, residents, students, etc.). Total revenues during this period amounted to approximately 13.0 million euros, indicating a year-on-year growth of 37.5% (and a 60.4% increase compared to the same period in 2019). It is noteworthy that in the third quarter of 2023, year-on-year increases in tickets sold (20.4%) and revenues (16.6%) were of lesser intensity, but when compared to the same period in 2019, the increases were more significant, at 51.1% and 66.2%, respectively.
In turn, the Regional Conservatories recorded the transfer of registration for 3,646 used vehicles in the third quarter of 2023, 88.0% of which were passenger cars and 11.2% light goods vehicles. There were also 32 heavy vehicles registered, approximately 0.9% of the total. Compared to the third quarter of 2022, the number of registrations decreased by 30, representing a year-on-year decrease of 0.8% (4.6% higher than in the third quarter of 2019). For the first nine months of 2023, there were 10,942 registrations of used vehicle transfers, indicating a 2.7% change compared to the same period in 2022 and a 7.7% increase compared to the corresponding period in 2019.
According to information gathered by the Automobile Association of Portugal (ACAP) from the Institute of Registration and Notary, a total of 5,099 new vehicles were registered by residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira from January to September 2023. This represents an increase of 23.6% compared to the same period in 2022 and a 47.1% increase compared to the first nine months of 2019. Between July and September 2023, the acquisition of 1,819 vehicles was recorded, representing a 13.8% increase compared to the same quarter in 2022.
Provisional data provided by the Regional Command of Madeira of the Public Security Police (PSP) show that from January to September 2023, there were 2,738 road accidents with police intervention, representing a year-on-year increase of 18.7% (16.0% higher than in 2019). The number of victims amounted to 903 persons (up by 89 over the same period in the previous year; 38 fewer than in the same period in 2019), including 815 recorded as minor injuries, 77 as serious injuries, and 11 as fatalities.
Air transport - Passenger movement at the Autonomous Region of Madeira’s airports grew 8.4% from January to September 2023
During the third quarter of 2023, the airports recorded a passenger movement of approximately 1,396.3 thousand, reflecting a positive year-on-year change of 8.4%. Compared to the same quarter in 2019, there was an increase of 41.6%. The airports of Madeira and Porto Santo exhibited distinct evolutions in passenger movement, with Madeira experiencing a 9.2% year-on-year increase and Porto Santo a 0.7% decrease. When compared to the same period in 2019, the values for 2023 exceeded those by 42.3% in Madeira and 32.7% in Porto Santo.
Between January and September 2022, passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira totalled approximately 3,706.7 thousand, indicating a year-on-year increase of 21.1% (41.6% higher than in the first nine months of 2019).
As for cargo, a decrease of 2.7% was observed in the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the third quarter of the year (-15.5% compared to 2019). Across all airports, unloaded goods increased by 0.7% in year-on-year terms (+11.5% compared to the third quarter of 2019), while loaded goods decreased by 17.6% (-52.7% compared to the same period in 2019).
Maritime transport - Goods movement in ports on the rise
In the domain of maritime transport, there was an upward movement in goods movement at the ports. In the first nine months of 2023, 168 cruise ships entered the ports of the Autonomous Region, 25 fewer than in the same period of the previous year. Compared to 2019, there were 3 additional ships that made stops at the region's ports. Despite a lower number of stops than the previous year, the number of transit passengers (366,456) increased significantly (+92.6% in year-on-year terms and +5.2% compared to the same period in 2019).
In the first nine months of the year, the Port of Funchal received 365,856 transit passengers, the vast majority (86.5%) of whom were Europeans. The predominant nationalities were German (38.6% of the total; -6.1% compared to 2019), British (37.9% of the total; +36.9% compared to 2019), French (1.6% of the total; -20.4% compared to 2019), and Italian (1.6% of the total; -50.8% compared to 2019). It is noteworthy that transit passengers from the American continent at Funchal Port (12.3% of the total) increased by 43.0% compared to 2019, with the most significant contributors being Americans (7.4% of the total; +36.5% compared to 2019) and Brazilians (2.5% of the total; +236.6% compared to 2019).
On the Madeira-Porto Santo line, the number of passengers in the third quarter of the current year increased by 13.9% compared to the same quarter in 2022 and was also higher than the values of 2019 (+18.7%). Cumulatively, in the first nine months, the number of transported passengers was 327.0 thousand, a figure above that of the previous year (+21.8%; +11.6% compared to the same period in 2019).
The change in the movement of goods at the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira in the reference quarter was generally positive compared to the same period in the last four years (+3.9% compared to the third quarter of 2022; +16.1% compared to the third quarter of 2019). This change was contributed to by year-on-year increases observed both in unloading (+3.5%; +18.1% compared to the same quarter in 2019) and loading (+7.1%; +3.3% compared to the third quarter of 2019) of goods. The cumulative year-on-year change was also positive (+6.6%; +18.6% compared to 2019).

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira makes available on its website, the Time Series of Transport Statistics updated with the data for 2022. The series comprises over 130 tables, making it the most extensive of the series published by DREM. The information is grouped into three chapters:
- Land Transport: Data on regular careers of public passenger transport by bus, road accidents, registered vehicles sold, tickets sold and revenues in cable cars, licensed taxis, and insured cars.
- Air Transport: Information regarding the commercial movement of aeroplanes, passengers, cargo, and mail at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
- Maritime Transport: Data on the movement of vessels, passengers, and cargo at the ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
