Movement of passengers at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 10.6% year-on-year
According to data provided by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in October 2023, there was a movement of 432.9 thousand passengers at the Autonomous Region of Madeira airports, transported by 2,968 aircraft (commercial flights), reflecting year-on-year changes of +10.6% and +5.2%, respectively. When compared to October 2019 (pre-pandemic period), there was also growth of +54.5% in passenger movement and +38.4% in aircraft movement. In the first ten months of 2023, the changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +12.8% and +19.9%, respectively.
Each aircraft (considering both landings and takeoffs) carried an average of approximately 151 passengers (144 in October 2022) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure reached 89 passengers (83 in the same month of the previous year).

In October 2023, domestic and international passengers’ movement at Madeira airports showed a positive year-on-year change in international traffic (+14.2%) and a similarly positive but less pronounced change in the domestic segment (+6.9%). Compared to the same period before the pandemic (2019), there was growth in both segments, with international traffic increasing by 54.8% and domestic traffic by 54.1%.
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (54.4%) predominated over domestic traffic (45.6% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a predominance of domestic traffic (75.5% of the total), but with less disparity compared to the previous September.
In this reference month, regular flights at ARM airports represented 91.3% of the total aircraft movements and 93.3% of passengers (92.2% and 93.6% in the same period of the previous year, respectively).
In October 2023, the occupancy rate of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 86.2%, with Madeira Airport reaching 86.9% and Porto Santo Airport at 76.1%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 82.3%, 82.9%, and 73.0%, in the same order.
From January to October 2023, passengers embarked and disembarked at Madeira airports amounted to 4,123.9 thousand, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located in national territory, including domestic and internal connections (47.8% of the total together) and the other half to international traffic (52.2%). In the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from ARM airports (32.7%), followed by Germany (20.0%) and France (9.0%).
During the IATA Summer season (International Air Transport Association) from March 26 to October 28, 2023, Madeira Airport operated commercial flights for 27 airlines (28 in the IATA Summer 2022), with 64 routes (60 in the same period of the previous year) to 57 destinations (54 in the IATA Summer 2022). Commercial flights were also conducted at Porto Santo Airport on 7 routes (8 in the IATA Summer 2022), by 8 airlines (9 in the same period of the previous year), serving 7 destinations (8 in the IATA Summer 2022).
