Passenger traffic at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 2.1% year-on-year

According to information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in April 2024, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a movement of 432.1 thousand passengers, transported on 2,870 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of +2.1% and +0.8%, respectively.

In the first four months of 2024, the changes in aircraft and passenger movements were -3.1% and +2.1%, respectively.

On average, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported about 156 passengers (155 in April 2023) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure exceeded 83 passengers (81 in the same month of the previous year).

In April 2024, domestic and international passenger traffic at the ARM airports showed a positive year-on-year change in international traffic (+6.2%) but a decline in the domestic segment (-2.4%).

At Madeira Airport, international traffic (55.5%) surpassed domestic traffic (44.5% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a predominance of domestic traffic (81.1% of the total), with a greater disparity compared to March 2024.

In this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 92.0% of the total aircraft movements and 94.3% of passengers (92.1% and 94.2% in the same period last year, respectively).

In April 2024, the occupancy rate of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 88.4%, with Madeira Airport reaching 89.2% and Porto Santo at 73.9%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rate was lower, at 87.8%, 88.9%, and 72.0%, in that order.

From January to April 2024, passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports totalled 1,498.0 thousand, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including domestic connections (47.4% of the total together), and the other half to international traffic (52.6%). In the context of the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (30.1%), followed by Germany (20.7%) and France (6.6%).
