Passengers’ traffic at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 3.0% year-on-year

According to information provided by ANA - Airports of Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in August 2024, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a movement of 494.8 thousand passengers, transported on 3,259 commercial flights, representing year-on-year changes of +3.0% and +0.9%, respectively.

In the first eight months of 2024, the year-on-year changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +0.3% and +4.0%, respectively.

On average, each aircraft (considering both arrivals and departures) transported, approximately 156 passengers (153 in August 2023) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, this figure achieved 113 passengers (109 in the same month of the previous year).

In August 2024, passenger traffic at airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 8.5% in international traffic but declined by 2.8% in the domestic segment.

At Madeira Airport, international traffic (57.0%) outpaced domestic traffic (43.0% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a preponderance of domestic traffic (81.7% of the total), although with less disparity compared to July 2024.

During this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 91.7% of the total aircraft movements and 94.4% of passengers (91.7% and 93.3% in the same period last year, respectively).

In August 2024, the occupancy of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 91.2%, with Madeira Airport reaching 91.6% and Porto Santo at 87.4%. In the same period of the previous year, the occupancy rate was slightly higher considered both airports together  (91,4%), as well as in Madeira Airport (92,0%). In Porto Santo, the occupancy of aircraft movements had been lower (84,2%).

From January to August 2024, the total number of passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports totalled 3,380.5 thousand, with half corresponding to traffic exclusively between airports located within the national territory, including internal and domestic connections (47.2% of the total), and the other half to international traffic (52.8%). In the context of the latter, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights from the ARM airports (28.7%), followed by Germany (20.1%) and France (9.2%).
