Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a year-on-year increase of 13.8%
According to data provided by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a total of 513.3 thousand passenger movement in May 2025, transported on 3 464 commercial aircraft. These figures represent year-on-year changes of +13.8% in passenger numbers and +15.7% in aircraft movements.
During the reference month, Madeira Airport registered increases in both aircraft movements (3,227; +17.7% compared to May 2024) and passenger numbers (491.6 thousand; +14.9%). Conversely, Porto Santo Airport recorded decreases in aircraft movements (237; -6.7% compared to the same period in 2024) and in passenger numbers (21.7 thousand; -6.1%).
In the first five months of 2025, aircraft and passenger movements increased by 12.0% and 10.8%, respectively.

In May 2025, the average number of passengers per aircraft (considering both arrivals and departures) was approximately 152 at Madeira Airport (compared to 156 in May 2024), while at Porto Santo Airport this figure was close to 92 (91 in the corresponding period of 2024).
In the same month, passenger movement at the ARM airports rose by 22.6% in the international segment (290.0 thousand passengers) and by 4.1% in the domestic segment (223.3 thousand passengers).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic accounted for the majority (58.4%) compared to domestic traffic (41.6% of the total). In contrast, at Porto Santo Airport, domestic traffic was predominant (86.8% of the total), with a higher proportion than in the same period of 2024 (78.0%).
In May 2025, regular flights accounted for 94.2% of total aircraft movements and 96.4% of total passengers at the ARM airports (compared to 92.3% and 95.1%, respectively, in May 2024).
The occupancy rate of aircraft movements at the ARM airports stood at approximately 85.7% in May 2025, with Madeira Airport recording 86.0% and Porto Santo 79.2%. In the corresponding month of the previous year, the load factor was higher overall (89.0%) and at Madeira Airport (89.8%), but lower at Porto Santo Airport (77.9%).
Between January and May 2025, the number of passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (excluding passengers in transit) totalled 2 159.6 thousand. Of this figure, 43.5% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports located within national territory, including both inter-island and domestic flights, while 56.5% related to international traffic. Within the latter category, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for international flights at the ARM airports (27.2%), followed by Germany (21.5%) and Poland (10.5%).
