Passenger movement at the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira registered a growth of 18.1% year-on-year
According to information provided by ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal to the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in August 2025, the airports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a movement of 584.5 thousand passengers, carried on 3 823 commercial flights, corresponding year-on-year changes of +18.1% and +17.3%, respectively.
In the month of reference, Madeira Airport recorded an increase, both in the movement of aircraft (3,480; +18.2% compared to August 2024), and in the number of passengers (545.5 thousand; +18.8%). At Porto Santo Airport, there was even a higher growth in the aircraft movement (343; +8.5% compared to same period of 2024) and in the number of passengers (39.0 thousand; +9.1%).
Over the first eight months of 2025, changes in aircraft and passenger movements were +13.9% and +13.0%, respectively.

In August of 2025, each aircraft (considering both landings and take-offs) transported, on average, approximately 157 passengers (156 in August 2024) at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, the corresponding figure was 113 passengers, value identical to that observed in the same period of the previous year.
In August of 2025, passenger movement at airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 21.9% in international traffic (327.1 thousand) and by +13.6% in the domestic segment (257.4 million).
At Madeira Airport, international traffic (59.1%) predominated over domestic (40.9% of the total). At Porto Santo Airport, there was a preponderance of domestic traffic (88.6% of the total), but with a higher disproportion compared to the same period of 2024 (81.7% of the total).
In this reference month, regular flights at the ARM airports accounted for 92.6% of the total aircraft movements and 94.2% of passengers (91.7% and 94.4% in August 2024, respectively).
In August of 2025, the occupancy of aircraft movements at the ARM airports was around 90.3%, with Madeira Airport reaching 90.6% and Porto Santo at 86.0%. Last year, the occupancy rate was higher in the two regional airports (91.2%), in Madeira airport (91.6%) and in Porto Santo airport (87.4%).
Between January and August 2025, the total number of passengers embarked and disembarked at the ARM airports (excluding transit passengers) amounted to 3,821.8 thousand. Of this total, 44.0% corresponded to traffic exclusively between airports within national territory, including domestic and internal connections, while 56.0% was international traffic. Among international traffic, the United Kingdom remained the main country of origin and destination for the ARM flights, representing 26.7% of the total, followed by Germany (20.2%). France ranked third (10.9%), closely followed by Poland (9.5%).
