DREM releases the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2020 and updates the Time Series (1976-2020)
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, on its official statistics website, the final results of Tourism Statistics for the year 2020 and at the same time updates the Time Series, including the information for 2020.
This publication contains a summary of the main results, from where the following was extracted:
Accommodation establishments (total)
- In 2020, the number of overnight stays in the global tourism accommodation (hotel establishments, rural and housing tourism, local accommodation, time-sharing, colonies, campsites and youth hostels) was close to 2.8 million, reflecting a drop of 67.0% compared to 2019. Residents in Portugal contributed with 597.4 thousand overnight stays, representing a decrease of 43.2%, while non-resident foreigners generated 2.2 million overnight stays, corresponding to a decrease of 70.4% in this variable.
Tourism accommodation establishments
-The number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation in 2020 – hotel establishments, rural tourism and local accommodation – stood at 2.7 million (-66.2% compared to 2019).
- Residents in Portugal contributed with 590.7 thousand overnight stays, a year-on-year decrease of 42.0%. The national market was the third most important, behind the German and British markets, representing 21.5% of the total.
- Overnight stays by non-resident foreigners originated around 2.2 million overnight stays (78.5% of the total), corresponding to a 69.6% decrease in this variable compared to the previous year. The main markets were the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, which accounted for 82.1% of overnight stays by non-resident foreigners.
- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 30.8%, dropping by 27.2 percentage points from 2019.
- The average length of stay was 4.83 nights, below the previous year (5.11 nights).
- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was 22.54 euros, dropping by 49.1% from 2019.
- The room revenue per room used (ADR), was around 65.49 euros in 2020, -4.9% than in the previous year.
Hotel establishments
- In the hotel establishments, the overnight stays decreased by 67.8%, while total and lodging revenue decreased by 68.3% and 68.5%, respectively, compared to the previous year.
- In terms of overnight stays, the main markets were the UK (26.3%), followed by Germany (23.2%) and Portugal (20.6%). The British market dropped by 65.7% while the German market fell by 67.4%.
- Portuguese tourists produced 447.8 thousand overnight stays (-45.3% than in 2019), representing 20.6% of the total. The Portuguese market was the third most important, following the British and German markets.
- The annual net bed-occupancy rate stood at 32.7%, declining by 29.2 percentage points from 2019.
- The average length of stay was 4.86 nights, lower than the previous year (5.17 nights).
- The revenue per available room (RevPAR) was €24.37 (down by 49.0% from 2019).
Rural tourism
- In 2020, the average number of establishments operating in rural tourism was 48, where 61,354 overnight stays were registered, representing a decrease of 61.2% compared to 2019.
Local lodging
- In local accommodation establishments, 95,170 guests were registered (-58.1%), which resulted in 514.5 thousand overnight stays, representing a decrease of 58.0% compared to 2019.
Time-sharing
- This segment was also heavily affected by the restrictive measures of the COVID-19 pandemic, with only 15,157 guests arriving (-76.0% compared to 2019). Overnight stays stood at 177,017, decreasing by 71.7% compared to 2019.
- The main markets were the UK (70.8% of the total bednights), Germany (9.3%) and Finland (7.2%).
Other types of collective tourist accommodation
- In 2020, there were 6,683 overnight stays in holiday camps and youth hostels, a decrease of 71.8% compared to 2019. The national market was responsible for 91.8% of the total overnight stays (-68.9% than in 2019).
Golf
- The data from the Golf Course Survey show that in 2020, the number of rounds played in the three golf courses of the Autonomous Region of Madeira stood at 37,427 (-42.8% compared to 2019). This activity generated 1.4 million Euros.
Movement of passengers aboard cruise ships in Madeira’s Ports
- The restrictive measures regarding the pandemic situation of COVID-19, in global terms, had a strong impact on this segment, being one of the most affected. In the Region, according to data provided by the Ports authority, in 2020, 70 cruise ships were accounted for (down by 228 from 2019), with 143,159 passengers in transit (-75.7%) than in 2019), mainly accounted for in the 1st quarter of 2020, since as of mid-March there was no movement of passengers in transit in the Autonomous Region of Madeira ports, except for October (27 passengers).
