Flash estimate - In October 2022, the overnight stays in tourism accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 24.4% year-on-year
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, for the month of October 2022, shows that 174.0 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 902.5 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +31.1% and +24.4%, respectively. Compared to October 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 45.3% and 31.5%.
Year-to-date (January to October), the number of guests arrivals and overnight stays stood around 1.5 and 8.2 million, respectively, representing year-on-year increases, by the same order, of 106.6% and 107.1%.
Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourism accommodation establishments, there was a year-on-year increase of 20.0%, in October 2022, a less sharp change than the one recorded at a national level (+23.5%).
In the Region, the overnight stays by residents in Portugal grew 28.3% year-on-year to 173.6 thousand (19.2% of the total), while overnight stays from foreign residents rose by 23.5% to 728.9 thousand. It should be noted that, compared to October 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +116.0% and +20.3%, in the case of those generated by residents abroad. The number of guests arrivals, resident in Portugal, in October 2022, totalled 48.0 thousand and the foreign guest, 126.0 thousand.
In the country, in October 2022, the domestic market contributed with 1.8 million overnight stays, having decreased 2.7% year-on-year. The external markets predominated (with a share of 72.7%) and totalled 4.9 million overnight stays (+37.3%).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 80.8% of overnight stays. In this group, the United Kingdom market is the one that registered the highest number of overnight stays accounting for 201.6 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany, with 185.1 thousand and France, with 58.2 thousand.
In October 2022, 10.1% of tourism accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests. In the reference month, the hotel sector had 93.8% of establishments with guest flow (same value as September 2022).
