[NOTE: Regarding the monthly publication of Tourism data for the year 2022, the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) will keep the model followed in the previous year, releasing an aggregate comprising the hotel sector, rural tourism, and local accommodation, independently of the number of beds. In turn, in its releases, Statistics Portugal (INE) excludes local accommodation establishments under 10 beds. In this press release and in the tables published by DREM the overall total for guests and overnight stays is higher when compared to INE’s. For the bed and room occupancy rates and for revenue and personnel costs, the figures of DREM and INE are the same since the local accommodation under 10 beds is not included in the compilation of these variables.]
In the first ten months of 2022
Number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Region has more than doubled compared to the same period in the previous year and stands 15.5% above the bednights of January to October 2019
The first estimates for October 2022 show that 89.9% of the establishments had a guest flow. Hotel establishments had the highest percentage of establishments which had guests (93.8%), followed by local accommodation with 89.8% and Rural tourism establishments with 84.1%.
In the month of reference, there was an estimated total of 902.5 thousand overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, representing an increase of 24.4% compared to the same month of the previous year (725.5 thousand overnight stays in October 2021).
It should be noted that, excluding local accommodation under 10 beds, overnight stays from tourist accommodation increased by 20.0% compared to October 2021, a less sharp change than that recorded in the country, which was 23.5%. Total revenue and revenue from accommodation increased more than overnight stays (31.9% and 35.6%, respectively) reaching, by the same order, 49.6 and 34.5 million euros. In the country, total revenue and revenue from accommodation registered, by the same order, positive year-on-year changes of 48.2% and 50.1%.
Hotel establishments concentrated 78.2% (706.1 thousand) of total overnight stays in October 2022, growing by 19.7% year-on-year, while rural tourism (2.1% of the total) rose by 17.8% and local accommodation (19.6% of the total) by 48.3%.
In the main markets, in October 2022, there were quite sharp increases when compared to the same period of the previous year. The French market stood out, registering the highest growth (+41.8%), followed by the British (+20.1%) and German markets (+16.1%). In the Portuguese market, the overnight stays also increased compared to October 2021 (+28.3%).
Comparing the reference period with October 2019 (pre-pandemic period), the activity in tourist accommodation sector showed a growth of 31.5% in overnight stays, with the market of residents abroad registering an increase of 20.3%. Considering the main markets of this segment, there were positive changes in the British (+18.9%), German (+10.0%) and French markets (5.5%). The Portuguese market maintained the growth trend, which has been recorded in recent months (+116.0% compared to October 2019).
Year-to-date (January to October 2022), the overall overnight stays reached 8.2 million, representing a year-on-year change of 107.1% and of 15.5% compared to the same period of 2019.
The average stay in tourism accommodation, in the month of October 2022, registered a decrease compared to the same month of the previous year (4.84 nights), standing at 4.63 nights.
The bed occupancy rate in the reference month reached 63.9%, growing by 3.6 percentage points over the same month of the previous year (60.3%). In turn, the room occupancy rate reached 73.9% (67.8% in October 2021).
In October 2022, the revenue per available room (RevPAR) was 62.98 euros in all tourist accommodation (excluding local accommodation below 10 beds), +25.5% compared to the same month of the previous year. Compared to the values of October 2019 (41.52 euros), the value of RevPAR grew by 51.7%. If the analysis is restricted to the hotel sector, that indicator showed a year-on-year increase of 29.0%, with its value standing at 69.00 euros (+54.5% than in October 2019).
The ADR (average daily rate) was 85.19 euros, which represents a year-on-year increase of 15.2%. In hotels, this ratio was 87.70 euros (+16.0%).

DREM expands dashboard of tourism activity
Last October, DREM made available a dashboard for the preliminary results of tourism activity. An expanded version of this dashboard is now released, in which the main statistical indicators of Tourist Accommodation, Golf and Cruise Ships, are now included, with data since 2019. This dashboard also includes the main indicators of the Tourism Satellite Account for the year 2019, released yesterday.
DREM thus hopes to meet the needs of users providing them with a fast and at the same time comprehensive overview of tourism activity in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
