Flash estimate – In the month of December 2022, the overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 46.5% year-on-year
The flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of December 2022 shows that 124.6 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 663.1 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +56.0% and +46.5%, respectively. Compared to December 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 42.0% and 35.1%.
The year-to-date values of incoming guests, for the period January to December 2022 (1.8 million), surpassed the annual values (January to December) of previous years, which approached 9.6 million, almost doubling (+91.9%) the figure of the same period of 2021 (about 5 million).
Comparing the regional data with the country’s it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and according to the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments, there was a year-on-year increase of 42.4%, slightly lower than the national level (+44.6%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 63.9% year-on-year, reaching 119.4 thousand and representing 18.0% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 43.1% compared to December 2021, standing at 543.7 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to December 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +103.2% and the residents abroad were 25.9%. The number of guests arrivals, resident in Portugal, in December 2022, was estimated at 34.5 thousand and the foreign guests at 90.1 thousand.
In the country, in December 2022, the domestic market contributed with 1.4 million overnight stays, having increased by 28.3%. External markets predominated (61.6%) and totalled 2.3 million overnight stays (+57.1%).

According to the flash estimate, the main source markets of non-residents represented 82.0% of overnight stays. Within this set, the United Kingdom market is the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 143.8 thousand in the respective month, followed by Germany with 141.6 thousand and France with 28.4 thousand.
In December of 2022, 12.1% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests.
