Flash estimate - In the month of March 2023, the overnight stays in tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira grew by 32.7% year-on-year
According to the flash estimate of the tourism accommodation sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira for the month of March 2023 it is estimated that 172.5 thousand guest arrivals were registered, generating 855.8 thousand overnight stays. This corresponds to year-on-year changes of +43.4% and +32.7%, respectively. Compared to March 2019, there were, by the same order, increases of 49.3% and 30.9%.
The year-to-date values of incoming guests, for the period from January to March 2023, amounted to 434.0 thousand. In the first quarter of this year, overnight stays were close to 2.3 million, +52.8% than in the same period of the previous year.
For comparability purposes with the data released by Statistics Portugal, it is necessary to exclude local accommodation under 10 beds, and accordingly to this criterion, the number of overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments had a year-on-year increase of 27.9%, slightly higher than that observed at the national level (+26.7%).
In the Region, the overnight stays from residents in Portugal grew by 46.9% year-on-year, reaching 146.4 thousand and representing 17.1% of the total, while overnight stays from foreign residents went up by 30.1% standing at 709.4 thousand. It is worth noting that, compared to March 2019, the change in overnight stays from residents in Portugal was +132.9% and the residents abroad were 20.0%. The number of guests arrivals, resident in Portugal, in March 2023, was estimated at 45.5 thousand and the foreign guests at 127.1 thousand.
In the country, in March 2023, the domestic market contributed with 1.5 million overnight stays, having increased by 16.3%. External markets predominated (with a share of 70.6%) and totalled 3.6 million overnight stays (+31.6%). By regions, Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (+30.8%) and Norte (+30.1%) presented a growth in overnight stays growth higher than 30%, in contrast to the Alentejo region, whose increase in this indicator did not exceed 13.4%.

In the reference month, the foreign residents represented 82.9% of the overall overnight stays in the Region. Within this set, the German market is the one with the highest number of overnight stays, accounting for 207.4 thousand in the respective month, followed by the United Kingdom with 162.6 thousand and France with 48.4 thousand.
In March of 2023, 11.2% of the tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not have any guests.
