Tourist accommodation in the Autonomous Region of Madeira recorded a historical monthly peak of 1.2 million overnight stays
According to the first data for the tourist accommodation sector in the Region, for the month of August 2023, it is estimated that there were 202.0 thousand guests who generated 1,153.2 thousand overnight stays, representing year-on-year changes of +7.1% and +2.9%, respectively. Compared to August 2019, there were increases of 39.3% and 25.8% in the same order. It is noteworthy that the number of guests and overnight stays in August 2023 is the highest ever recorded on a monthly basis.
From January to August 2023, overnight stays amounted to approximately 7.4 million, which is +15.9% compared to the same period in the previous year.
For the purpose of comparability with data released by Statistics Portugal (INE), it is necessary to exclude local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 beds. According to this method of calculating results, overnight stays in tourist accommodation in August 2023 showed a slight year-on-year decrease of 1.2%, in contrast to the national trend (+1.4%). By regions, Norte led in growth (+5.4%), with the Algarve recording the largest decrease (-1.9%).
In the Region, overnight stays by residents of Portugal experienced a decrease of 10.6% compared to the same month the previous year, reaching 220.6 thousand (19.1% of the total), while overnight stays by residents from abroad increased by 6.7%, reaching 932.6 thousand. It should be noted that compared to August 2019, the change in overnight stays by residents of Portugal was +39.9%, while for residents from abroad, it was +22.9%. In August 2023, there were 48.5 thousand guests from within the country and 153.4 thousand from abroad.
In the country as a whole, in August 2023, the domestic market contributed 3.5 million overnight stays, a decrease of 6.9% year-on-year. The international markets predominated (accounting for 65.7% of the total) and totalled 6.6 million overnight stays, growing by 6.4%.

The first estimated data for the reference month in the Region show that the markets of residents from abroad accounted for 80.9% of the total overnight stays. Within this group, the UK market recorded the highest number of overnight stays in August 2023, with approximately 198.1 thousand (-7.8% compared to the same month the previous year), followed by Germany with 192.1 thousand (+4.5%), and France with 105.0 thousand (-2.5%).
In August 2023, 8.2% of tourist accommodation establishments were either closed or did not record guest activity.
