The foreign population residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached its highest level in the last 13 years
According with the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), on December 31st 2020, the foreign population with resident status in the Autonomous Region of Madeira reached 9,455 persons – the highest value since 2008 – representing an increase of 10.1% from 2019. The overall foreign population is the total of residence permits (9,455), since there was no registration of long-stay visas.
The Venezuelan (24.5%), British (14.2%), Brazilian (9.5%), and German (6.6%) nationalities remain the largest foreign communities residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

In 2020, there was a growth in the number of foreigners residing in the Region holding a residence permit with Venezuelan or British nationalities, representing an increase of +12.2% (from 2,066 in 2019 to 2,319 in 2020) and +21.8% (from 1,102 in 2019 to 1,342 in 2020), respectively.
The return of emigrants in Venezuela was one of the main reasons behind the growth of foreign population between 2019 and 2020 (869 persons), contributing with 29.1% of the overall increase. The following largest contributions were due to nationals from the United Kingdom and Germany, representing 27.6% and 8.9%, respectively, of the total increase in the foreign population between 2019 and 2020.
In terms of geographical distribution, it is in Funchal that the foreign population is still mainly concentrated (51.5% of the total of the Region), followed by Santa Cruz (13.6%), Calheta (9.6%) and Ribeira Brava (5.0%). By gender, the share of females (51.8%) is slightly higher than the proportion of males (48.2%).
