Number of births, deaths and marriages increased compared to 2021
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today data on live births, deaths and marriages for 2022.
In this release, the data refer to 2022 and are based on the information registered at the Civil Registry Offices up to March 2023. It should also be noted that the information related to deaths in 2022 is subject to revision after the codification of the causes of death.
The final results of demographic statistics show that in 2022, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a natural decrease of -1,345 persons as result of a number of live births (1,758) lower than deaths (3,103). The difference between the number of births and deaths has remained negative since 2009, with the 2022 data further accentuating this trend.
Births - Percentage of live births of mothers aged 40 or over increased again
In 2022, there were 1,758 live births, children of mothers who reside in the region, up by 0.8% (14 children) from 2021, reversing the declining birth rate trend observed since 2018. The highest number of births occurred in December (170) and the lowest in June (116).
Of the 1,758 children born in 2022, 51.3% were male, representing a sex ratio at birth of 105, i.e., 105 males were born for every 100 females. In the country, this figure was the same.
Continuing a trend that has been observed since 2016, most of the live births of 2022 took place outside marriage, accounting for 62.3% (60.2% in the country): 41.8% were cohabitant parents and 20.5% were of non-cohabiting parents.
The highest concentration of live births occurred from mothers aged over 29 years (64.4%), which is lower than the national average (66.2%). Note that mothers between 30 and 39 years old accounted for 54.9% of the total births registered this year.
The share of live births from mothers aged 40 years or over stood at 9.4% (166 live births), higher than in 2021 (8.7%; 152 live births). The number of live births from teenage mothers (19 years or under) decreased from 34 in 2021 to 25 in 2022 (1.9% in 2021 and 1.4% in 2022).
On average, mothers residing in the region gave birth to their first child at an average age of 30.5 years old, slightly earlier than in 2021 (30.8 years old).
Deaths - March had the highest number of deaths in 2022
There were 3,103 deaths in 2022, up by 228 over the previous year (2,875), representing an increase of 7.9%.
Of the total number of deaths, 81.6% were persons aged 65 or over (86.6% in the country) and 52.3% were persons aged 80 or over (60.7% in Portugal).
The number of deaths varied throughout the months of the year. The highest figure occurred in March (310 deaths) and the lowest in August (217 deaths).
In 2022, there were 1,453 deaths of men (46.8%) and 1,650 deaths of women (53.2%). Since the beginning of the century, only from 2010 did the number of female deaths begin to exceed that of men, with the exception of 2016.
In the year of reference, 3 deaths under 1 year (6 in 2021) and 7 dead fetuses of mothers residing in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (6 in 2021) were recorded. As a result, he infant mortality rate stood at 1.7 deaths per 1,000 live births (3.4 in 2021), a value below the national average (2.6 deaths per thousand live births).
Marriages - Average age at first marriage increased
In the Region, in 2022, 1,139 marriages were celebrated, which represents an increase of 31.5% compared to the previous year (866 marriages). Of the total number of marriages, 97.5% were celebrated between persons of the opposite sex, while the remaining 2.5% were same-sex marriages (29 in total: 11 between men and 18 between women).
The number of marriages varied throughout the months of the year, reaching the highest value in August (151 marriages). The lowest number of marriages occurred in January, with 46 marriages celebrated.
The results also show that 67.5% of the marriages celebrated in 2022 were first marriages. It should be noted that in 70.9% of the marriages, the spouses already cohabited. According to property regime, 65.3% of the total number of marriages opted for joint marital property.
Regarding the form of celebration of marriages between persons of the opposite sex, 71.7% were performed civilly and 28.1% according to the catholic rite.
The mean age at marriage ascended to 33.4 years for women and 34.9 years for men (respectively, 32.7 e 34.7 years in 2021).
In 2022, there were 1,102 marriage dissolutions due to the death of the opposite sex spouse, 2 fewer than in 2021, resulting in 311 widowers and 791 widows. The dissolution of marriage due to the death of a spouse affects mainly women, particularly due to the higher female life expectancy.
