In March 2023
Despite being negative, the natural balance improved year-on-year
In March 2023, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded 239 deaths, with 71 fewer deaths compared to March 2022 (-22.9%). In the first three months of the year, there were 763 deaths, 93 fewer than in the same period last year (-10.9%).
The assessment of "excess mortality," which compares the number of deaths in the reference month to the average values for the same month from 2016 to 2019, reveals a mortality deficit of 4.7%. This indicates that March 2023 had fewer deaths than all the other months of March within that interval of years, except for March 2017.
There were no deaths of infants under 1 year or stillborn fetuses in March 2023.
Furthermore, in March 2023, there were 142 live births, indicating a slight decrease of one birth compared to March 2022. The total number of live births recorded in the first three months of 2023 (435) was 1.2% higher than in the same period of 2022 (+5 live births).
As a result of these live births and deaths, there was a negative natural balance of 97 persons in March 2023, which was less severe than in the same month last year when it reached -167. In the first quarter of 2023, the value of the natural balance was -328, showing an improvement compared to the same period in 2022 (-426).
In the third month of 2023, 69 marriages were celebrated, representing a significant increase of 43.8% compared to the number of marriages in March 2022 (21 more marriages). From January to March 2023, 185 marriages were celebrated, representing an increase of 44 marriages (+31.2%) compared to the same period last year.
