Mortality due to circulatory system diseases and malignant neoplasms increased while that related to respiratory system diseases decreased
DREM releases today data on the 2020 causes of death by municipality, age group and gender. In order to compare the number of deaths in the different municipalities, mortality rates were used based on the provisional estimates of the average population obtained from the 2011 Census.
In 2020, by municipality, the crude death rate was higher in Porto Moniz (2,363.6 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants), followed by Santana (1 347.4) and Ponta do Sol (1 469.6).
Mortality due to "Diseases of the circulatory system" was the leading cause of death for residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, accounting for 827 deaths, corresponding to a rate of 325.5 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants (313.7 in 2019). The municipalities of Porto Moniz, São Vicente and Ponta do Sol had the highest rate (687.6; 546.0 and 478.2 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, respectively). Only the municipalities of Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos and Machico had rates below the Region's average.
"Malignant neoplasms" constituted the second main cause of death, with 662 deaths, corresponding to a mortality rate of 260.6 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants (244.8 in 2019). Porto Moniz was the municipality with the highest rate, followed by São Vicente and Porto Santo with rates of 558.7, 409.5 and 384.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively. Death by "Malignant neoplasm of the trachea and bronchi and lungs" was the main cause of death (36.6 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants) followed by "Malignant neoplasm of the colon" (21.3) and "Neoplasm of the breast" (18.9). By municipality, in Funchal, apart from the above causes, mortality due to "Malignant neoplasm of the prostate" stands out.
Deaths caused by "Respiratory system diseases" were the third main cause of death in the region, presenting a mortality rate of 164.9 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (174.7 in 2019). Porto Moniz is once again the municipality presenting the highest rate for this cause, followed by São Vicente and Ponta do Sol with rates of 386.8, 331.5 and 314.9 deaths per 100 thousand inhabitants, respectively.
