In 2021
Number of physicians, dentists and nurses increased in the Autonomous Region of Madeira
The number of physicians registered in the Guild, in 2021, was 1,271, up by 5.7% when compared to the previous year (1,202 physicians). Of those 57.4% (729) were women. According to the place of residence, 72.1% (917) of the physicians were in Funchal, 13.1% (167) in Santa Cruz and 4.6% (59) in Câmara de Lobos.
Of the total number of physicians in 2021, 724 were specialists (57.0%) and 547 (43.0%) were non- specialists.
According to post-census estimates of the Resident Population for 2021, based on the provisional results of the 2021 Census, on average, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, there were 5.1 physicians per 1,000 inhabitants. By municipality, the highest value was recorded in Funchal (8.7 physicians per 1,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Calheta and Santana (1.1 physicians per 1,000 inhabitants). The ratio for the Autonomous Region of Madeira stands below the country (5.7), but above the Autonomous Region of the Azores (3.9).
The number of dentists registered in their professional order was 229, representing an increase of 6.0% when compared to 2020 (216). On average, there were 0.9 dentists per thousand inhabitants in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This ratio stands below the country (1.1), but is higher than in Autonomous Region of the Azores (0.8).
The number of registered nurses in The Portuguese Order of Nurses increased by 2.9% in 2021 when compared to 2020 (2,452 in 2021; 2,383 in 2020). On average, there were 9.8 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, a higher value than in Portugal (7.8) and below the Autonomous Region of the Azores (9.9).
The data now available is included in the " 2020 Health Statistics of the Autonomous Region of Madeira" publication, whose full edition will be released in the first quarter of 2023.
