DREM releases the “Health Statistics” publication, which includes a chapter with the causes of death
DREM releases today the publication “Health Statistics in the Autonomous Region of Madeira”, which includes a chapter with data concerning the causes of death. The other chapters of this publication were released throughout 2015, as data became available.
The number of physicians registered in the Guild at December 31st of 2014 was 841, up by 8.1% when compared to the corresponding day of 2013. The number of physicians per 1 000 habitants maintained an upward trend; in 2013 there were 3.0 doctors per 1 000 habitants, while in 2014 that ratio rose to 3.3.
In 2014, 2,077 nurses were registered in the Guild (down by 0.8% from 2013), which corresponded to 8 nurses per 1 000 habitants (equal in 2013).
The data from the Hospitals Survey show that, in 2014, the average number of inpatient beds was 1 822, representing a ratio of 7.0 beds per 1 000 habitants (7.1 from 2013).
In 2014, 312.8 thousand external appointments were registered, a smaller figure than in 2013 (313.5 appointments).
11.5 thousand major and medium surgeries were performed, 24.5% of which urgent. The number of minor surgeries stood at 12.4 thousand (10.0 thousand in 2013), dropping by 23.5% from 2013.
In the year of reference, 1 725 parturitions were counted in Madeira’s hospitals (down by 5,1% from 2013), 19 of which were twin parturitions.
Data concerning the causes of death show that, in 2014, the diseases of the circulatory system – the main cause of death – were responsible for 28.5% of the total deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.The malignant neoplasms and the diseases of the respiratory systemaccounted for 22.3% and 18.1% of the total number of deaths.
