In the first half of 2021
Egg production, livestock slaughtering and landed catch recorded a year-on-year growth, while poultry meat dropped
According to information gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from industrial poultry farms in the Region, in the first six months of 2021, egg production stood at 10.9 million units, increasing by 13.4% year-on-year.
In the same period, the poultry meat totalled 1,455.6 tonnes, decreasing by 20.5% compared to the same period of 2020.
According to data provided by the Slaughter Centre of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM), the weight of the slaughtered livestock reached 411.7 tonnes, increasing by 3.0% year-on-year.
Regarding fisheries, the information collected from the Regional Directorate of Fisheries for the first six months of 2021, shows an increase both in volume (+25.2%, totalling about 3,207.4 tonnes) and in first sale receipts (+12.6% being the half-year total of 8.6 million euros) compared to the same period of last year.
This growth was mainly driven by the increase in the catch of tuna and tuna-like species (+66.2% in volume and +39.7% in first sale receipts). In fact, the quantity of tuna and tuna-like fish caught and the first-sale value rose by 66.2% and 39.7%, respectively. The species with the highest catch volume in the first six months of the year was indeed tuna and tuna-like fish (63.7% of the total), followed by black scabbardfish (28.6% of the total). However, the catch of black scabbardfish decreased by 18.1% year-on-year, and the first sale receipts generated by this species dropped by 19.6%.
In the reference period, the mean value of fish landed was €2.71 (€3.00 in the same period of 2020), with the average price for tuna and similar reaching €2.50 (2.96€ in the first half of 2020). In the case of the black scabbardfish, the mean value was €3.02 (€3.06 in the first six months of the last year). It should be mentioned that these ratios exclude the unloaded fish destined for self-consumption.
Aquaculture production grew year-on-year
