Between January and September 2021
Egg production, livestock slaughtering and landed catch registered a year-on-year increase while poultry meat decreased
According to information gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from industrial poultry farms in the Region, between January and September of 2021, egg production stood at 17.0 million units, increasing by 21.4% year-on-year.
In turn, the poultry meat totalled 2,316.6 tonnes, decreasing by 14.4% compared to the same period of 2020. In the period from July to September, egg production and poultry meat registered a year-on-year growth of 38.5% and 1.5% respectively.
Regarding livestock slaughtered, expressed in tonnes, it grew by 5.0% year-on-year in the first three quarters of 2021, justified by both the increase in the slaughtering of pigs (+18.2%) and cattle (+4.2%). The year-on-year change in livestock slaughtered for the 3rd quarter was +8.2%.
In the area of fisheries, data provided by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries (DRP) show that between January and September this year, fish unloading reached 4 590.0 tonnes, generating first sale revenues of €12.4 million, showing growth both in volume (+13.1%) and in first sale receipts (+2.7%) compared to the same period of last year.
This growth was mainly driven by the increase in the catch of tuna and tuna-like species (+30.5% in volume and +10.3% in first sale receipts).
The species with the highest catch volume in the first nine months of the year were indeed tuna and tuna-like fish (59.9% of the total), followed by black scabbardfish (30.9% of the total). However, the catch of black scabbardfish decreased by 12.2% year-on-year, and the first sale receipts generated by this species dropped by 13.5%.
In the reference period, the mean value of fish landed was €2.73 (€2.99 in the same period of 2020), with the average price for tuna and similar reaching €2.45 (2.89€ in the first half of 2020). In the case of the black scabbardfish, the mean value was €3.02 (€3.05 in the first six months of the last year). It should be mentioned that these ratios exclude the unloaded fish destined for self-consumption.

Aquaculture production grew year-on-year
According to the information gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from the aquaculture production companies operating in the Region, between January to September of 2021, the output of sea bream was 1,107.6 tonnes, up by 17.6% year-on-year. In turn, sales topped 5.4 million euros, rising by 14.7%.
By markets, the national market (Mainland Portugal and the Azores) accounted for 90.2% of the sales value, and the regional market for 9.7%.
