Industrial poultry farming and landed catch grew compared to the same period last year, while livestock slaughter experienced a decline
According to information collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from the Region's industrial poultry farms, egg production reached approximately 7.8 million units in the 1st quarter of 2023, representing a 13.7% increase compared to the same period last year.
During the same period, poultry slaughter increased by 13.4% compared to the first three months of the previous year, reaching 921.1 tonnes.
On the other hand, according to data provided by the Regional Slaughterhouse of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM), the total livestock slaughtered amounted to 175.8 tonnes, a decrease of 10.0% compared to the 1st quarter of 2022.
In the fishing domain, information collected from the Regional Fisheries Directorate for the 1st quarter of 2023 shows a year-on-year increase in the quantities of landed catch by 1.2% and a 39.0% increase in the value of first sales. In the first three months of the current year, landed catch in the Region amounted to approximately 809.6 tonnes, generating first sale revenue of 4.2 million euros.
Among the main captured species, there were decreases in chub mackerel (-39.3%) and black scabbardfish (-1.4%), while there were increases in blue jack mackerel (+29.4%) and tuna and tuna-like species (+15.0%).
In terms of value, black scabbardfish stood out positively (+43.1%), along with tuna and tuna-like species (+37.6%) and blue jack mackerel (+16.5%), contributing to the aforementioned positive change in total revenues. It is worth noting that in this quarter, 66.0% of the landed catch were related to black scabbardfish.
The average price of fish obtained at the first sale for the reference period (excluding fish landed for self-consumption) was 5.25 euros (3.83 euros in the same period of 2022), with the average price for tuna and tuna-like species reaching 9.25 euros (7.73 euros in the same period last year) and for black scabbardfish, it was 4.67 euros (3.23 euros in the first three months of the previous year).
Aquaculture generated higher sales value year-on-year, despite reduction in production
Based on the data collected by DREM from aquaculture production companies in the region, the 1st quarter of 2023 saw a decline in seabream production, with 444.4 tonnes produced, reflecting a 12.8% decrease compared to the same quarter of 2022. However, despite the reduction in production, sales experienced a positive trend, reaching 2.5 million euros, indicating a growth of 5.5% compared to the corresponding period last year.
When analysing the market distribution, it becomes evident that a significant portion of the sales value, specifically 88.8%, is attributed to sales made to Mainland Portugal and the Azores, while the regional market accounts for only 11.0% of the total sales.
