In the 1st semester of 2023,
Poultry farming and the value of landed fish increased compared to the same period last year, while slaughtered cattle, the volume of unloaded fish and aquaculture production decreased
According to the data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from the industrial poultry farms in the Region, egg production reached around 16.0 million units, indicating a 12.4% increase compared to the previous year.
During the same period, poultry slaughter grew by 12.4% compared to the first six months of the previous year, totalling 1,818.2 tonnes.
Focusing on the 2nd quarter of 2023, there were year-on-year increases of 10.9% in egg production and 11.3% in poultry slaughter compared to the same quarter of 2022.
On the other hand, data provided by the Regional Autonomous Centre of Slaughter (CARAM) reveals that between January and June 2023, slaughtered cattle amounted to approximately 395.2 tonnes, reflecting a year-on-year change of -10.2%, influenced by the evolution observed in the 2nd quarter of 2023 (-10.4%).
In the field of fisheries, information collected from the Regional Directorate of Fisheries for the 1st half of 2023 indicates a year-on-year decrease in the quantities of landed catch (-18.7%), with a total of approximately 2,419.7 tonnes. However, the total value of first sales increased by 8.8%, reaching 10.9 million euros for the semester. In the 2nd quarter of 2023, the year-on-year changes were -26.0% in quantity and -4.2% in value.
Regarding specific species, compared to the first six months of 2022, the quantity of captured tuna and similar species decreased by 34.3%, while the value of first sales decreased by 12.0%. The catch of black scabbardfish decreased in quantity (-3.1%) but increased in value of first sales (+38.7%), making it the most abundant species in the first six months of 2023, accounting for 47.4% of the total, followed by tuna and similar species with 40.9%.
The average price of fish in the first sale for the reference period (excluding fish landed for self-consumption) was 4.56 euros (3.41 euros in the same period of 2022), with an average price of 4.70 euros for tuna and similar species (3.51 euros in the same period of the previous year) and 4.72 euros for black scabbardfish (3.31 euros in the first six months of the previous year).

Aquaculture production decreased by 39.2% year-on-year
According to data collected by DREM from aquaculture production companies in the Region, in the 1st half of 2023, 622.2 tonnes of seabream were produced, showing a significant decrease of 39.2% compared to the previous year. In turn, sales amounted to 3.7 million euros, reflecting a decrease of 28.2%.
In terms of markets, 85.8% of the sales value was attributed to the national market (mainland Portugal and the Azores), with only 14.1% to the regional market.
In the 2nd quarter of 2023, there was a more notable decline in both quantity produced and sales value, with changes of -65.4% and -57.8%, respectively.
