In 2017
Overall waste production in Madeira stood at 186.1 thousand tonnes
According to the estimates provided by the Regional Directorate of Land Use Planning and Environment, the 2017 global production of waste in Madeira reached 186.1 thousand tonnes, decreasing by 4.0 thousand tonnes over the previous year (-2.1%). This decrease is related to the deposition of inert material which dropped from 32.7 thousand tonnes in 2016 to 25.4 thousand tonnes in 2017. Discounting the inert material – whose figures have been extremely irregular – the rate of change between 2016 and 2017 of overall waste production would be of 2.2%.
The waste deposited in the solid waste treatment plant of Meia Serra (132.9 thousand tonnes) increased by 1.7% compared to 2016, while the waste destined for recycling/valorisation outside the Region stood at 25.9 thousand tonnes (up by 6.6%).
Regarding recyclable waste, the sum of cardboard and paper reached 9.1 thousand tonnes (down by 2.0% from 2016), while glass accounted for 6.0 thousand tonnes (up by 4.8%) and scrap/metals for 5.7 thousand tonnes (+19.8%).
