DREM releases Environmental Statistics
Data gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira for the year 2017 show that the distributed water through the public water system stood at 26.6 million cubic metres, a 1.6% increase from 2016. 54.9% of that total was for household consumption (57.1% in 2016).
In 2017, the global production of solid waste in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 186.1 thousand tonnes, down by 4.0 thousand tonnes over the previous year. This decrease is related to the deposition of inert material which went down from 32.7 to 25.2 thousand tonnes between 2016 and 2017.
The waste deposited in the solid waste treatment plant of Meia Serra (132.9 thousand tonnes) increased by 1.7% compared to 2016, while the waste destined for recycling/valorisation outside the Region stood at 25.9 thousand tonnes (up by 6.6%).
The consolidated expenditure of the Regional Government of Madeira in environmental management and protection was 19.4 million euros, 49.5% of which destined to “Protection and remediation of soil, groundwater and surface water” (75.1% in 2016).
In 2017, the 686 firemen of the 10 fire brigades located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, carried out 43,326 services (up by 12.4% from 2016), 73.2% of which were related to health/prehospital situations. In the reference year, the expenditure of the fire brigades stood at 10 million euros, down by 3.3% from 2016. 77.5% of that total refer to compensation of employees (79.7% in 2016).
Compared to 2016, there was less rainfall in both Funchal (377 mm in 2017 and 647 mm in 2016) and Porto Santo (367 mm in 2017 and 498 mm in 2016). In Funchal, the average maximum temperature was 23.4ºC (23.0ºC in 2016). The average minimum temperature increased from 17.4ºC in 2016 to 17.8ºC in 2017.
Information regarding the air quality index for Funchal shows that in 2017, 88.6% of the observations were rated good or very good while only 5.7% were negative.
In the reference year, 94 forest fires were registered, which consumed an area of 1,570 hectares, 658 ha of which of wooded area. In 2016, the number of fires had been lower (54), but the area consumed was higher (6,270 ha).

DREM releases Time Series on Environmental Statistics for the 1989-2017 period
DREM also releases today on its website, the Time Series on Environmental Statistics, updated with the data for 2017.
The series contains data about water supply, water treatment and drainage, solid waste, expenditures of the regional and local scope entities in environmental management and protection by economic aggregate and domain, data on air quality, quality of water for human consumption, weather, forestry fires, firemen, namely blue flag beaches, quality of bathing waters, information on the nature and environment protection service and defense actions against forest fires.
