In 2018
Overall waste production in Madeira stood at 223.8 thousand tonnes
According to the estimates provided by the Regional Directorate of Land Use Planning and Environment, the 2018 global production of waste in Madeira reached 223.8 thousand tonnes, increasing by 37.7 thousand tonnes over the previous year (+20.3%). This increase is related to the deposition of inert material which grew from 25.2 thousand tonnes in 2017 to 62.5 thousand tonnes in 2018. Excluding this component - which over the years has shown a marked irregularity - the annual change in overall waste production would be 0.3%.
The waste deposited in the solid waste treatment plant of Meia Serra (130.8 thousand tonnes) decreased by 1.5% compared to 2017, while the waste destined for recycling/valorisation outside the Region stood at 29.1 thousand tonnes (up by 12.2%).
Regarding recyclable waste, cardboard accounted for 8.0 thousand tonnes (up by 3.0%) and scrap/metals for 6.5 thousand tonnes (+14.5%).
