In the 1st quarter of 2022
Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 28.6%
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the first quarter of 2022 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 28.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, reaching 484.7 million euros. The purchases through ATP rose by 39.3% with the cash withdrawals growing by 11.5% year-on-year.
This increase was due to the rise in the value of international cards, which went up by 141.7%, with national cards also contributing (+16.4%). It should be noted that, in the first quarter of 2021, some pandemic control measures caused an impact on tourist activity, with overnight stays for the first three months standing far below the values of 2019 and the years before, which explains the pronounced growth in the first quarter of 2022, especially regarding international cards.
With regard to payments, these totalled 41.2 million euros, +14.5% year-on-year. Withdrawals with national cards totalled 149.0 million euros in the first quarter of this year, up by 7.2% year-on-year, while those made with international cards totalled 13.5 million euros, rising by 99.4% on the same period in 2021.
In turn, purchases through automatic payment terminals (POS) stood around 247.3 million euros (+22.8% over the first three months of 2021), while purchases with international cards reached 74.9 million euros (+151.4% year-on-year).

Data by municipality shows that in Funchal, withdrawals and purchases stood at 303.5 million euros, which corresponds to 62.6% of the total of the Region, with this aggregate of withdrawals and purchases via POS up by 36.2% in this municipality. On the other hand, Porto Moniz was the municipality with the lowest value in this indicator, standing at 2.7 million euros. Nonetheless it was the municipality with the highest year-on-year rate of change (+71.5%).
