Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals recorded a year-on-year increase of 31.4%
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the second quarter of 2022 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 31.4% compared with the same period of the previous year, reaching 591.8 million euros. The purchases through ATP rose by 45.3% with the cash withdrawals growing by 8.1% year-on-year.
This increase was due to the rise in the value of international cards, which went up by 163.0%, with national cards also contributing (+15.2%).
With regard to payments, these reached 45.2 million euros, +10.8% year-on-year. Withdrawals with national cards totalled 165.7 million euros in the first quarter of this year, up by 3.5% year-on-year, while those made with international cards totalled 16.3 million euros, rising by 96.7% over the same period of 2021.
In turn, purchases through automatic payment terminals stood around 296.0 million euros (+22.9% over the 2nd quarter of 2021), while purchases with international cards reached 113.9 million euros (+176.3% year-on-year).

Data by municipality shows that in Funchal, withdrawals and purchases stood at 367.6 million euros, which corresponds to 62.1% of the total of the Region, with this aggregate of withdrawals and purchases via APT up by 35.6% in this municipality. On the other hand, Porto Moniz was the municipality with the lowest value in this indicator, standing at 4.2 million euros. Nonetheless it was the municipality with the highest year-on-year rate of change (+84.2%).
Between January and June 2022, the aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through APT grew by 30.1% in Madeira and by 27.1% in Portugal, vis-a-vis the same period of 2021. Porto Moniz led the rise, with an increase of 79.0% in this aggregate. In Funchal, which concentrated 62.3% of withdrawals added to purchases through APT, there was a +35.9% growth.
