Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals recorded a year-on-year increase of 17.7% in the Region
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the third quarter of 2022 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 17.7% compared with the same period of the previous year, reaching 654.5 million euros in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) rose by 23.9% and the cash withdrawals also grew by 5.2% year-on-year.
This increase was due to the rise in the value of international cards, which went up by 42.8%, reflecting the increase in tourist demand, above national cards (+11.3%).
With regard to payments, these reached 50.3 million euros, +9.2% year-on-year. Withdrawals with national cards totalled 173.5 million euros in the third quarter of this year, up by 3.1% on the same period in the previous year, while those made with international cards totalled 21.2 million euros, rising by 25.6% over the same period of 2021.
In turn, national purchases through automatic payment terminals stood at around 320.6 million euros (+16.3% over the 3rd quarter of 2021), while purchases with international cards reached 139.1 million euros (+45.9% year-on-year).

Data by municipality shows that in Funchal, withdrawals and purchases stood at 398.1 million euros, which corresponds to 60.8% of the total of the Region, with this aggregate of withdrawals and purchases via APT up by 19.1% in this municipality. On the other hand, Porto Moniz was the municipality with the lowest value in this indicator, standing at 5.7 million euros. Nonetheless, it was the municipality with the highest year-on-year rate of change (+40.0%).
Between January and September 2022, the aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through APT grew by 25.1% in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and by 23.9% in Portugal, vis-a-vis the same period of 2021. In this period, increases were recorded in all municipalities. Porto Moniz led the rise, with an increase of 59.1% in this aggregate. In Funchal, which concentrated 61.8% of withdrawals added to purchases through APT, there was a +29.1% growth.
