In the 1st quarter of 2023
Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 22.0%
In the first quarter of 2023, data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the Autonomous Region of Madeira showed that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) amounted to 591.3 million euros, representing an increase of 22.0% compared with the same period of the previous year. This growth was mostly driven by a 29.0% increase in purchases through ATP although withdrawals also rose by 8.1% year-on-year.
It is worth noting that the overall increase mentioned above was due to both the 46.3% increase in movements with international cards - reflecting the growth in tourism in the 1st quarter of 2023, when overnight stays grew by 52.8% - and the 17.0% rise in national cards.
As for payments, they totalled 61.7 million euros, up 49.7% from the same period last year.
Breaking down withdrawals into national and international, the former amounted to 160.0 million euros in the 1st quarter of this year, up by 7.1% compared to the same period last year, while the latter amounted to 15.6 million euros, up by 20.1% from the same period in 2022.
In turn, purchases through APT made with national cards amounted to 309.9 million euros (+22.9% compared to the first three months of 2022), while purchases made with international cards amounted to 105.8 million euros (+51.1% compared to the same period last year).

Data by municipality shows that in Funchal, withdrawals and purchases in aggregate stood at 371.0 million euros, which corresponds to 62.7% of the total of the Region. On the other hand, Porto Moniz was the municipality with the lowest value in this indicator, standing at 3.9 million euros. However, this municipality had the highest year-on-year change (+44.2%), in contrast to Machico, which had the lowest change (+12.7%).
