In the 1st quarter of 2025
Aggregate value of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals in the SIBS network grew 8.5% year-on-year
The data provided by Sociedade Interbancária de Serviços (SIBS), for the Autonomous Region of Madeira, referring to the 1st quarter of 2025, show that the amounts for the two main operations of the SIBS network (withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals - APT), considered as a whole, amounted to 686.0 million euros (2.8% of the national total), meaning an increase of 8.5% compared to the same period last year (+4.4% in the country). This growth was mainly driven by a 12.4% increase in purchases made using automatic payment terminals (+8.5% nationwide), as surveys recorded an annual drop of 1.9% (-5.5% nationwide).
It is also worth highlighting that the global increase mentioned above resulted from a 12.0% rise in transactions with international cards and a 7.5% growth in national cards. Nationally, the changes were +2.9% and +4.5%, in the same order.
Breaking down the withdrawals into national and international, it can be seen that, in the 1st quarter of the current year, the former amounted to 156.2 million euros, while the latter totalled 14.2 million euros, representing year-on-year changes of -2.1% and 0.8%, respectively.
In turn, purchases through APT made with national cards were around 381.5 million euros, reflecting an increase of 12.4% compared to the 1st quarter of 2024, while those made with international cards totalled 134.0 million euros, equivalent to a rise of 12.0% compared to the same period last year.
When analysing the total purchases by purchase type – in-store and online, it is observed that the year-on-year changes were +10.1% for in-store purchases and +63.8% for online purchases, with online purchases representing only 6.2% of the total.
In the 1st quarter of 2025, purchases made through APT were mostly made in the sectors of “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” (57.3% of the total) and “Accommodation, food and similar” (22.0% of the total). In these sectors, annual increases of 11.4% and 7.8% were observed, respectively.

The analysis of the data by municipality shows that 422.9 million euros were transacted in Funchal, accounting for 61.6% of the total for the Region. The year-on-year growth in withdrawals added to purchases via APT in Funchal was 7.8%. In the opposite direction, Porto Moniz was the municipality with the lowest value of transactions, reaching 5.1 million euros. Machico stood out with the highest year-on-year growth (+23.7%), contrasting with São Vicente, which showed a negative change (-0.6%).
