In the 2nd quarter of 2025,
Aggregate value of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals in the SIBS network increased by 8.7% year-on-year
The data provided by Sociedade Interbancária de Serviços (SIBS) for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), referring to the 2nd quarter of 2025, shows that the values for the two main operations of the SIBS network (withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals – POS’s), taken together, amounted to 777.0 million euros (2.8% of the national total), representing an increase of 8.7% compared to the same period last year (+5.7% nationwide). This growth was mainly due to the 12.4% increase in purchases through automatic payment terminals (+9.2% nationwide), as withdrawals registered a 1.9% annual decline (-3.3% nationwide).
It should be noted that the increase in global transactions mentioned above, detailed by both types of cards (international and national), is also associated with the year-on-year increases recorded in the movements of international (+13.1%) and national(+7.3%) cards, with the former standing out against the latter. Nationally, the changes were +6.9% and +5.5%, in the same order.
Breaking down withdrawals into national and international, it can be seen that in the second quarter of this year, the former totalled 167.0 million euros, a 2.4% decrease compared to the same quarter of the previous year, while the latter totalled 15.6 million euros, representing a 3.0% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
In turn, purchases made through APT terminals with national cards totalled approximately 416.7 million euros, an 11.7% increase compared to the second quarter of 2024, while those made with international cards totalled 177.8 million euros, representing a 14.1% increase compared to the same period last year.
When analysing the total purchases by purchase type – in-store and online, it is observed that the year-on-year changes were 12.1% and 17.3%, respectively, with online purchases accounting for only 6.1% of the total.
In the second quarter of 2025, purchases made through POS terminals were primarily made in the "Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" (55.6% of the total) and "Accommodation, food, and similar" (23.6% of the total) sectors. These two subclasses of the Classification of Economic Activities (CAE Rev. 3) accounted for 79.2% of the total purchases mentioned. These sectors saw annual increases of 13.1% and 9.5%, respectively.

Analysis of the data by municipality shows that Funchal handled 464.1 million euros, representing 59.7% of the region's total. Year-over-year growth in withdrawals plus purchases through APT terminals was 6.5%. Conversely, Porto Moniz had the lowest transaction volume, totalling 8.7 million euros. However, it also experienced the largest annual change (+43.6%), while São Vicente showed the least significant change (+1.5%).
In cumulative terms, in the first half of 2025, aggregate withdrawals and purchases through POS terminals totalled 1.5 billion euros, an 8.6% increase year-over-year. Transactions with international cards stood out, growing 12.6% compared to the first half of 2024, compared to 7.4% for transactions with national cards. The breakdown between withdrawals and purchases via POS terminals shows that while the former fell by 1.9%, the latter rose by 12.4% compared to the first six months of last year.
