In the 1st quarter of 2016
Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 5.3%
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the first quarter of 2016 show that the aggregate of cash withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 5.3% compared with the same period of the previous year (slightly above the 5.2% increase registered in Portugal). While the cash withdrawals grew by 2.4%, the purchases through ATP rose by 8.0%. In turn, the amount spent on payments remained unchanged, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Breaking down the data concerning withdrawals, the figures show that in the period of reference, international cards were used to withdraw 16.2 million Euros (1.0% y-o-y increase), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totaled 137.6 million Euros, a 2.5% increase when compared with the same period of 2015.
At the country level, the year-on-year rates of change were lower in all cases. National withdrawals rose by 2.4% while the international withdrawals decreased by 3.3%. The y-o-y average growth in withdrawals was 2.1%.
Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the first quarter 2016 was higher in Madeira (+8.0%) than in Portugal (+7.9%). In the Region, the purchases through APT using national cards increased by 7.6% while those made using international cards rose by 9.7%.
