In the 2nd quarter of 2016
Aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals registered a year-on-year increase of 6.2%
Data provided by the Interbank Services Society (SIBS) for the second quarter of 2016 show that the aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through automatic payment terminals (APT) increased by 6.2% compared with the same period of the previous year (above the 4.8% increase registered in Portugal). In the aforementioned period, the cash withdrawals grew by 2.9% while the purchases through ATP rose by 9.3%. In turn, the amount spent on payments had a 1.6% year-on-year (y-o-y) increase.
International cards were used to withdraw 17.8 million Euros (3.3% y-o-y increase), while the amount of withdrawals using national cards totaled 150.2 million Euros, up by 2.8% when compared with the corresponding period of 2015.
At the country level, international withdrawals went down by 5.9% while the national withdrawals increased by 1.9%. The y-o-y average growth in withdrawals was 1.4%.
Concerning purchases through automatic payment terminals, the year-on-year change rate for the second quarter 2016 was higher in Madeira (+9.3%) than in Portugal (+7.7%). In the Region, the purchases through APT using national cards increased by 8.2% while those made using international cards rose by 13.5%.
Between January and June 2016, the aggregate of withdrawals and purchases through ATP grew by 5.8% in Madeira and 5.0% in Portugal, vis-a-vis the same period of 2015.
