32.6% of internet users in the previous 3 months used artificial intelligence tools
In 2025, the proportion of households in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) with Internet access reached 93.4%, an increase of 0.8 percentage points (pp) compared with 2024. Broadband usage stood at 90.2% of households, 1.3 pp higher than in 2024.
The proportion of persons residing in the ARM aged between 16 and 74 who reported using the internet in the 3 months prior to the interview stood at 88.3%, reflecting an increase of 0.7 pp compared to 2024 (87.6%). Nationally, this proportion was 89.5%, exceeding the region by 1.2 pp. Peninsula de Setúbal (95.5%), Grande Lisboa (95.2%) and Algarve (91.9%) were the only regions to surpass the national average. Centro had the lowest proportion (86.0%), followed by Norte (86.6%), Alentejo (87.0%), the ARM (88.3%), Oeste e Vale do Tejo (89.1%), and the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA) with 89.2%.
Communication continues to be the main activity carried out by persons aged 16 to 74 who used the internet in the 3 months prior to the interview in 2025: in the ARM, 94.0% exchanged instant messages (via WhatsApp, Messenger, etc.) and 81.3% sent or received emails. Nationally, the situation was similar, with 93.5% exchanging instant messages and 87.9% sending or receiving emails.
Among those who used the internet in the previous 12 months, 67.1% reported interacting with public entities through websites or internet applications (67.4% in 2024). At a national level, this percentage was 74.2%, with Grande Lisboa standing out with the highest proportion (85.9%).
For the first time, the Survey on the Usage of Information and Communication Technologies by Households included, in 2025, some questions about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The results showed that 32.6% of persons aged 16 to 74 used AI tools in the 3 months prior to the survey. In Portugal, 38.7% of persons used these tools, with Grande Lisboa leading at 48.4%.
The use of the Citizen Card (CC) or Digital Mobile Key (CMD) as a form of digital authentication for accessing online services was reported by 27.9% of internet users aged 16 to 74 in the past 12 months. Nationally, 38.9% of persons used either the Citizen Card or Digital Mobile Key under these conditions.
In 2025, 38.7% of the ARM residents aged 16 to 74 engaged in e-commerce in the 3 months prior to the interview, +0.3 pp than in 2024, representing the highest value in the series beginning in 2013. In Portugal, this proportion was 49.6%, 0.7 pp higher than the previous year.
In the current year, 93.7% of households with at least one person aged 16 to 74 had access to TV by subscription, 0.4 pp higher than in 2024. This proportion was 4.5 pp higher than in Portugal (89.2%).
The proportion of households who had Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) at home rose to 18.0%, which corresponded to 17 098 households with 22 976 televisions connected to DTT. Additionally, in the ARM, 14.0% of households had both subscription television and DTT, 2.3 pp below the national figure (16.3%).
