In 2024
18% of Municipal Councils of Madeira used artificial intelligence
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today the results of the Survey on the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Municipal Councils (IUTICCM), referring to the year 2024. This operation is under the responsibility of the Directorate-General for Education and Science Statistics (DGEEC), the delegated entity of Statistics Portugal (INE) in this domain. In the Region, the coordination of the IUTICCM — including data collection, validation and analysis — is carried out by DREM.
The results of the IUTICCM show that all Municipal Councils ensure an Internet presence, providing a permanent communication channel with citizens. This digital presence is strengthened by mechanisms for active participation, with 55% of local authorities offering public consultation procedures directly on their websites. It should also be noted that 18% of the municipalities in the Region reported the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in their activities.

In the domain of cybersecurity, 100% of Municipal Councils regularly update their software, ensuring protection against known vulnerabilities. To safeguard network integrity, particularly in the context of external access, 73% of local authorities have implemented remote network access control systems, and 82% use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Additionally, 64% of municipalities carry out security testing of their Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
Regarding labour mobility and flexibility, 72.7% of Municipal Councils provide virtual and/or home-based workstations (such as Desktop as a Service – DaaS), while 81.8% use Voice over IP (VoIP) communication technologies, facilitating remote collaboration.
