In 2017
Electricity production increased by 0.8% compared with the previous year
In 2017, the electricity production, estimated from the data on the distribution of electric energy provided by the Electricity Company of Madeira, increased by 0.8% compared with the previous year.
Breaking down the data by source it should be highlighted that, compared to 2016, the electricity generated by hydropower decreased by 26.0%. This decline was compensated by the growth in production through other sources, mainly by thermal power (+3.6%) and solid waste (+33.9%). Thermal power represented 72.0% of the total production in 2017 (70.1% in 2016). It should also be mentioned that the production of thermal power based on natural gas represented 17.4% of the total production mix, having increased by 24.9% from 2016.
The 2.7% year-on-year growth in the 4th quarter of 2017 contributed to the aforementioned increase in the electricity production of that year.
DREM releases more data about the energy sector for the year 2016
DREM also publishes today on its website data for 2016 compiled by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) concerning the consumption of electric energy and the number of consumers of electric energy in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
