Number of non-financial enterprises and its number of employees, turnover and Gross Value Added increased
DREM releases today on its official statistics website a set of tables for the financial and non-financial enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with data for the 2013-2018 period, with the particularity of the information for 2018 being a definitive nature, replacing the provisional data released last October. The transition to final results allows DREM to present a wider range of information for the year 2018. DREM has also decided to make available now the information regarding enterprises - anticipating its release in about 3 months - while the set of data of establishments (local units) will only be available in May, when Statistics Portugal expects to upload this information to its official statistics website.
In 2018 there were 28,123 enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 248 of which from the financial sector and 27,875 of the non-financial sector. The total of enterprises employed 74,779 persons, 74,369 in the non-financial sector and 410 in the financial sector.
In the reference year, the number of non-financial enterprises sector of the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 5.6% and the employees by 7.4%. In Portugal the growth rates were 2.9% and 4.3%, respectively.
In 2018, the turnover generated by Madeira’s enterprises stood at 5,108.5 million Euros, up by 9.1% from 2017. The Gross Value Added at market prices (GVAmp) stood at 1,641.3 million Euros, increasing by 9.0% from 2017.
By industry, the most important sector was “Accommodation and food service activities” (373.9 million euros, 22.8% of the total GVA), followed by “Trade” (293.1 million euros, 17.9% of the GVA), “Construction” (160.5 million euros; 9.8% of the GVA) and “Transportation and storage” (159.2 million euros, 9.7% of the GVA).
