Number of non-financial enterprises and its number of employees, turnover and Gross Value Added increased
DREM releases today on its official statistics website, provisional data for 2018 concerning non-financial enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. These data will become final in the middle of the first half of 2020, and by then DREM will update the “Time Series on Enterprise Statistics”. The set of tables now released contains information for the 2013-2018 period. Part of the information of this statistical area will only become available with the final results.
In 2018 there were 27,659 enterprises of the non-financial sector headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira which employed 74,367 persons.
In the reference year, the number of non-financial enterprises in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 4.8% and the employees by 7.4%. In Portugal the growth rates were lower: 2.0% and 4.2%, respectively.
In 2018, the turnover generated by Madeira’s enterprises stood at 5,082.3 million Euros, up by 8.6% from 2017 (6.4% in the country). The Gross Value Added at market prices (GVAmp) stood at 1,360.9 million Euros, increasing by 8.3% from 2017 (5.6% in the country).
According to the legal form, 92.8% of the GVA was generated by companies and 7.2% by individual enterprises. By size, the data show that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) concentrated 75,5% while the 18 large–sized enterprises headquartered in the Region were responsible for 24.5% of the GVA.
By industry, the most important sector was “Accommodation and food service activities” (370.3 million euros, 22.7% of the total GVA), followed by “Trade” (276.3 million euros, 16.9% of the GVA), “Construction” (159.9 million euros; 9.9% of the GVA) and “Transportation and storage” (159.0 million euros, 9.7% of the GVA).
