Turnover, Gross Value Added and number of employees in non-financial enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased above national average
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its official statistics website a set of tables for financial and non-financial enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, with data for the 2014-2019 period. The information for 2019 is final, thus replacing the provisional data released last October. This allows DREM to present a wider range of information for the year 2019. Data of establishments (local units) will only be available next May.
In 2019, there were 28,905 enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, 244 of which of the financial sector and 28,661 of the non-financial sector. Of that total, two in three were individual enterprises and one in three, companies. The 28,905 enterprises employed 79,785 persons, 79,401 in the non-financial sector and 384 in the financial sector.

In the reference year, the number of non-financial enterprises sector of the Autonomous Region of Madeira totaled 28,661, increasing by 2.8% and the employees stood at 79,401, 6.8% above the previous year. In Portugal, the growth rates were 3.1% and 4.1%, respectively.
By size, the regional enterprises belong almost exclusively to the groups of SMEs. The larger part are micro (96.07% of SMEs). In 2019, the number of enterprises of medium size stood at 162, up by 8.0% over 2018, while the large ones were 21 (up by 4 over 2018). In the country, the share of SMEs is 99.90%.

In 2019, the turnover generated by Madeira’s enterprises stood at 5,762.7 million Euros, up by 12.8% from 2018. The Gross Value Added at market prices (GVAmp) stood at 1,781.5 million Euros, increasing by 8.5%. The net profit of the period also rose by 14.2% in 2019, growing to 680.3 million Euros.
92.8% of the GVA is generated by companies and 73.9% by SMEs. The 21 large-sized enterprises headquartered in the Region concentrated 26.1% of the GVA.
By industry, the most important sector was “Accommodation and food service activities” (383.4 million euros, 21.5% of the total GVA), followed by “Trade” (293.1 million euros, 16.5% of the GVA), “Construction” (222.7 million euros; 12.5% of the GVA) and “Transportation and storage” (184.0 million euros, 10.3% of the GVA).
