In 2016
Agri-food sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira weighed 6.8% of the Gross Value Added and concentrated 18.3% of the number of jobs
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today, for the first time, the results of an analysis on the agri-food sector of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This study is based on a similar work developed by the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC), presented on the 20th edition of the Statistics Conference of the Autonomous Communities of Spain. The goal is to estimate the weight of the agri-food sector in Production, Intermediate Consumption and Gross Value Added (GVA) and also in employment variables, such as jobs, employees and compensation of employees.
The first step in this study was to make the sector delimitation, identifying the three main branches of economic activity of the agri-food system: agricultural sector, agri-food industry and food distribution.
In order to carry out the estimation of the aggregates, detailed information coming from the Regional Accounts project was provided by request to Statistics Portugal (INE). Information collected by DREM through surveys directed to Trade enterprises and data of Annual Reports was also used. Whenever necessary, personalized contacts were made in order to gather additional data from the enterprises.
Estimates show that in 2016, the agri-food sector in the Autonomous Region of Madeira contributed to the GVA in the amount of 263.6 million euros, which represents a share of 6.8% in total GVA. The "Trade and packaging activities" accounted for half of the GVA in the agri-food sector, generating 131.3 million euros.
In terms of production and intermediate consumption, the shares are 8.2% and 10.3%, respectively.
Regarding employment, the number of jobs in the agri-food sector in 2016 was 22,340, representing 18.3% of the total jobs in the economy. Compared to GVA, production and intermediate consumption this percentage is larger, reflecting how labour intensive are these activities, particularly in the case of agriculture, given the small size of holdings and the orography, which make mechanization difficult. In fact, 55.8% of the jobs in the agri-food sector belong to "Agriculture, animal production, hunting, forestry and fishing" (12,462 jobs).
The number of paid employees stood at 11,199 and the compensation of employees was 114.4 million euros.
