According to the Lists of Personnel, the number of employees and mean monthly earning increased by 3.2% and 0.5% from 2015, respectively
The Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM) releases today, on its website, the update of the Time Series on Lists of Personnel with data for 2016.
These data comes from the statistical compilation of information provided by the Annex A of the Single Report which contains data about the social activity of the enterprise. All employers with at least one employee must provide data, which is reported by establishment.
In the scope of this statistical operation, in 2016, 43.1 thousand employees (full time and full paid) were counted in the establishments located in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Compared with 2015, there was a 3.2% increase.
In 2016, the tertiary sector concentrated the vast majority of employees (81.9%). 17.4% of the employees worked in the secondary sector and 0.8% in the primary sector. The number of employees in the tertiary sector went up by 4.0% from 2015, while in primary sector there was a 2.4% increase. In the secondary sector the number of employees dropped by 0.7%.
In 2016, 52.4% of the employees were male and 47.6% female, and in both cases the figures are above 2015, by 2.5% and 3.9%, respectively.
By size class, the largest increase between 2015 and 2016 was registered in enterprises with between 250 and 499 employees (+45.7%, up by 1, 170 employees). The enterprises with 1-9 employees concentrate 21.0% of the total number of employees and are the most representative class, ahead of the “500 and over” class (19.8%). The number of employees with basic education – 2nd cycle or lower and with a bachelor degree were the only which showed a decrease from 2015. The most representative groups of employees by level of education were “secondary” (29.1%) and basic education – 3rd cycle (27.3%). Employees with a graduate degree or higher accounted for 13.4% of the total. Their importance continues to grow: in 2006 they represented 6.8% and in 1996 only 1.4%. The mean monthly earning in 2016 stood at 1,063.46€, 0.5% higher than in the previous year (€1.058,26). Male employees (€1,160.17) had a higher earning than female employees (€956.95). The gap between genders shrunk during the 1995-2016 period. While in 1995 women received 77.6% of the earnings of male employees, this ratio rose to 82.5% in 2016.
The level of education is an important factor of differentiation among employees. The employees with a lower level of education (below basic education) have a lower mean monthly earning (€822.17). Between those with the basic education 1st cycle (€895.31) and basic education 3rd cycle (€895.76), the gap is not pronounced but it widens for those with secondary education (€1,030.61). Holding a graduate degree allows a significant increase in the mean monthly earning (€1,822.07). The employees with a PhD have the highest earning (€2,118.64).
