Number of accidents at work decreased slightly compared to the previous year
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website, a time series on accidents at work, updated with data for 2017.
According to the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Labour and Inspection Action, there were 3,536 accidents at work in the Autonomous Region of Madeira In 2017, of which resulted three casualties. Compared to 2016, the total number of accidents at work fell by 32, representing a decrease of 0.9%. There were three casualties in 2017 (two in the previous year). The sectors of “Accommodation and food service activities”, “Construction” and “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” were the ones which concentrated a higher number of accidents at work, representing in 2017, 18.4%, 15.2% and 14.6% of the total, respectively. The sector “Human health activities and social support” recorded the largest decrease, with fewer 62 accidents, meaning a 27.9%drop. This sector accounted for 4.5% of the total number of accidents at work
The larger part of the accidents happened with men (68.1%) and with persons aged between 35 and 54 years old (54.6%). The professional groups of “Cleaners and helpers” (366 accidents) and “Professional service workers” (347 accidents) were the ones with a higher number of accidents in 2017. Most accidents happened in a “Tertiary activity area, office, amusement area, miscellaneous” (1,209) and in “Construction site, quarry, open pit mine” (543).
The main types of occurrence that caused injury were “Physical and mental stress” (36.9% of the total) and “Horizontal or vertical impact with or against a stationary object” (26.5%). “Wounds and superficial injuries” (43.7%) and “Dislocations, sprains and strains” (33.0%) were the most common types of injury. More than half of the accidents affected the upper or lower extremities of the body (32.6% and 26.1%, respectively).

36.5% of the non-deadly accidents at work did not imply absence from work. 7 to 13 days away from work were the consequence of 14.0% of the non-deadly accidents. In 2017, the highest number of days lost happened in “Accommodation and food service activities” (18,616 days, 18.6% of the total).
