Number of accidents at work increased slightly compared to the previous year
The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today on its website, a time series on accidents at work, updated with data for 2018.
According to the data provided by the Regional Directorate of Labour and Inspection Action, there were 3,545 accidents at work in the Autonomous Region of Madeira In 2018, of which resulted one fatal work accident (three in the previous year). Compared to 2017, the total number of accidents at work raised to more 9, representing an increase of 0.3%. The sectors of “Accommodation and food service activities”, “Construction” and “Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles” were the ones which concentrated a higher number of accidents at work, representing in 2018, 19.6%, 18.9% and 13.5% of the total, respectively. The sector “Artistic, show, sports and recreational activities” recorded the largest decrease, with fewer 65 accidents, meaning a 35.3% drop. This sector accounted for 3.4% of the total number of accidents at work.
The larger part of the accidents happened with men (68.3%) and with persons aged between 35 and 54 years old (54.9%). The professional groups of “Skilled construction workers and the like, except electrician” (746 accidents; 21.0%) and “Professional service workers” (358 accidents; 10.1%) were the ones with a higher number of accidents in 2018. The majority of the accidents happened in an “Industrial Zone” (805) and in “Tertiary activity area, office, amusement area, miscellaneous” (503).
The main types of occurrence that caused injury were “Physical and mental stress” (18.1% of the total) and “Horizontal or vertical impact with or against a stationary object” (11.8%). “Wounds and superficial injuries” (35.3%) and “Dislocations, sprains and strains” (29.4%) were the most common types of injury. More than half of the accidents affected the upper or lower extremities of the body (30.0% and 23.2%, respectively).
29.9% of the non-deadly accidents at work did not imply absence from work. 7 to 13 days away from work were the consequence of 17.1% of the non-deadly accidents. In 2018, the highest number of days lost happened in “Construction” (21,740 days; 23.2% of the total).
