The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases the "Education Time Series of the Autonomous Region of Madeira" updated with information from the 2020/2021 school year, provided by the Education Observatory of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (OERAM), as an organisational unit of the Regional Directorate of School Administration (DRAE), of the Regional Secretariat of Education, Science and Technology.
In the 2020/2021 school year, 117 establishments provided pre-primary education in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (the same number as the previous school year), with the number of early childhood educators standing at 666 (645 in 2019/2020). The number of enrolled students increased by 183 children compared to the previous school year (+3.1%), reaching 6.0 thousand. For the third consecutive year, since 2010/2011, there has been an increase in the number of children enrolled in pre-primary education. It should be recalled that in the 2017/2018 school year the lowest number of enrolled students was recorded (5.6 thousand students), with the highest having occurred in the 2006/2007 school year (8.1 thousand students). In the last decade, there has been a decrease of 23.4% in the number of children enrolled in pre-primary education.
In 2020/2021 there were 23.5 thousand students enrolled in primary education, representing a drop of 6.1% (-1,525 students) when compared with the previous school year. There was a fall of 7.9% in the first cycle, 5.0% in the second cycle and 4.9% in lower secondary education. The total number of students in primary education corresponds to the lowest value observed since the beginning of the time series, contrary to 1999/2000, which was the school year with the highest number of students enrolled, approximately 38.2 thousand. The difference between the minimum and maximum of the series corresponds to a drop of 14.7 thousand students. Over the last ten years, the decrease in the number of students enrolled in primary education was very sharp: 33.1%, 34.4% and 22.0% in the first and second cycle and in lower secondary education, respectively.
In secondary education there were about 10.7 thousand students enrolled, - 2.4% (-263 students) than in the previous school year, thus returning to the downward trend that began in the 2019/2020 school year. It should be noted that in 2005/2006 this indicator reached the highest value of the series (11.9 thousand pupils) and in 2000/2001 the lowest value (8.2 thousand). Compared to 2010/2011, the number of students enrolled in secondary education decreased by 4.3%.
In overall terms (from pre-primary education to secondary education), in the 2020/2021 school year, 40.2 thousand students were enrolled in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents a decrease of 3.8% (-1,605 students) when compared to the previous school year. Students enrolled in the first cycle have been decreasing since 2007/2008, students in the second cycle since 2011/2012 and students in the lower secondary education since 2013/2014 and in secondary education since 2015/2016 (with the exception of the school year 2018/2019, which recorded an increase of 3.2%). It should be underlined that the total number of students is the lowest since the beginning of the series. Of the 40.2 thousand students, public education concentrates 79.1% of the enrollments and private education 20.9%.
Concerning teaching staff assigned to pre-primary, primary and secondary education (including vocational education), 5.8 thousand teachers were in service, down by 144 (-2.4%) from the 2019/2020 school year. It should be noted that this decrease resulted from the reduction in teaching staff in the first cycle (-49 people), in lower secondary and secondary education (-108 people) and in vocational courses (-13 people). The other levels of education saw increases, which totalled 26 people.
The transition/completion rate in primary education and secondary education decreased compared to the previous school year, now standing at 97.2% (-0.7 pp) and 89.1% (-0.4 pp), respectively, reversing the growth observed since 2013/2014.
