Higher temperatures were recorded at Funchal/Observatory and Lugar de Baixo stations

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a summary of the main meteorological data for May 2025, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information¹ is provided by the Regional Delegation of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA I.P.) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM).

Air temperature
In May 2025, the highest average temperature was recorded at the Funchal/Observatory and Lugar de Baixo stations (19.7 °C), while the lowest was observed at Pico do Areeiro (9.1 °C).
Compared to the normal climatological values² for the month of May, all six stations with available data showed positive anomalies in average air temperature. The largest deviation was observed at Funchal/Observatory, with +1.8 °C above the normal value.
Regarding monthly extremes, the absolute maximum temperature was 24.7 °C, recorded at Funchal/Observatory, Lugar de Baixo, São Vicente and Porto Moniz on different days. The absolute minimum temperature was 0.6 °C, recorded at Pico do Areeiro on the 1st.

Precipitation
In May 2025, the highest total precipitation was recorded at Chão do Areeiro (258.4 mm), while the highest daily value occurred at Lugar de Baixo on the 10th (81.9 mm). Selvagem Grande recorded the lowest monthly value (2.3 mm).
Compared to the May climatological normal (1961–1990), all stations recorded above-average monthly totals, with Chão do Areeiro showing the largest positive anomaly (+141.8 mm).
As for the number of days with precipitation (rain, rainy and very rainy days), Santana had the highest number of days with rain (18 days with ≥ 0.1 mm) and the most rainy days (12 days with ≥ 1.0 mm). The highest number of very rainy days (≥ 10 mm) was observed at both Pico do Areeiro and Chão do Areeiro, each with 7 days.

Relative humidity
In May 2025, the average monthly values of relative humidity ranged from 68% at Funchal/Observatory to 87% at Monte. The lowest daily value (2%) was recorded at Pico do Areeiro on the 28th, while the highest (100%) was recorded at 10 stations on different days throughout the month.

Wind
In May 2025, among the stations equipped with anemometers, the highest average wind intensity was recorded at Caniçal (18.7 km/h), while the lowest was at Monte (3.9 km/h). The strongest wind gust of the month was also recorded at Caniçal on the 1st, reaching 101 km/h.

Sunshine duration
In May 2025, the number of sunshine hours (defined as hours of unobstructed solar radiation) was 251.6 hours at Santa Catarina/Airport³, 240.8 hours at Porto Santo/Airport (above the normal value of 223.3 hours), and 210.9 hours at Funchal/Observatory (exceeding the normal of 182.9 hours).

Seawater temperature
In May 2025, the average seawater temperature at Molhe da Pontinha (Funchal) was 19.5 °C, with a positive anomaly of +0.9 °C compared to the normal for the month. The highest temperature was recorded on the 27th (20.9 °C), and the lowest on the 2nd (18.4 °C).

¹ – Daily data and cumulative monthly values refer to observations made between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.
² – The 1971-2000 normals were used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the other stations, the 1961-1990 normals were applied.
³ – No normal values for sunshine duration are available for the Santa Catarina/Airport station.
