In January 2024

Average air temperature exceeded the climatological normal in all stations, with changes of around 4°C

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released today a summary of the main meteorological data for January 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Air Temperature

In January 2024, the highest average temperature (20.4°C) was recorded in Porto Moniz, while the lowest average temperature was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (8.4°C). Compared to the climatological normals2 of January, all stations for which this information was available (7 stations) showed higher values, with Santo da Serra standing out with a deviation of +4.5°C from the normal for this station. It is also noteworthy that the Porto Moniz station recorded 7 days with maximum temperatures above 25°C. Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded last month, the extremes were recorded at the São Vicente station (28.4°C on the 27th) and the Pico do Areeiro station (-0.5°C on the 19th). It is worth noting that the 19th was the coldest day in 16 stations.

Precipitation

In January 2024, the highest total precipitation value was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro station (328.4 mm), with the highest daily precipitation value observed on the 14th, reaching 111.4 mm at this station. Conversely, the lowest monthly value was recorded at Porto Santo/Airport (65.2 mm). Compared to the climatological normal for January 1961-1990, the Santo da Serra station stood out with a negative anomaly of about 145.8 mm. The Funchal/Observatory station had the highest positive value compared to the normal (+70.0 mm). Analysing days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy days, and very rainy days), it is concluded that the maximum number of rainy days (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santo da Serra station (25 days), despite the aforementioned larger negative anomaly. The maximum number of rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (16 days), and the maximum number of very rainy days (days with 10 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Pico Alto station (10 days).

Relative Humidity

In January 2024, the average monthly values of relative air humidity ranged between 67% in Porto Moniz and Lugar de Baixo, and 88% in São Jorge. The minimum daily value of relative air humidity (2%) was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro, Lido, and Quinta Grande stations on several days in January, and the maximum value (100%) was reached at 10 stations, also on different days of January.

Wind

In January 2024, among the stations with anemometers, the Chão do Areeiro station recorded the highest average wind speed (28.7 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (5.3 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 16th at Chão do Areeiro (143 km/h).

The maximum and minimum insolation (number of hours of uncovered sunshine) in January was 142.3 hours at Funchal/Observatory and 134.4 hours at Porto Santo, with normal values being 140.4 hours and 134.9 hours, respectively.

Notes:

2 - The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.
