In February 2024

Average air temperature exceeded the climatological normal in all stations, while total precipitation was lower

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a summary of the main meteorological data for February 2024, simultaneously updating the respective Dashboard. This information1 is provided by the Delegation of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere I.P. (IPMA I.P), in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Air Temperature

In February 2024, the highest average temperature (19.9 °C) was recorded in Lugar de Baixo while the lowest average temperature was recorded at the Pico do Areeiro station (9.4 °C). Compared to the climatological normals2 of February, all stations for which this information was available (7 stations) showed higher values, with Chão do Areeiro standing out with a +4.5 °C deviation from the normal for this station. Regarding the absolute maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in the last month, the extremes were recorded at São Vicente station (26.9 °C on the 2nd) and Pico do Areeiro (0.4 °C on the 27th).

Precipitation

In February 2024, the highest total precipitation value was recorded at the Chão do Areeiro station (215.7 mm), with the highest daily precipitation value observed on the 9th reaching 199.0 mm at this station. Conversely, the lowest monthly value was recorded at Ponta de São Lourenço (5.0 mm). Compared to the climatological normal for February 1961-1990, the Santo da Serra station stood out with a negative anomaly of about 178.3 mm. No station showed positive values in relation to normal.

Analysing days with precipitation (days with rain, rainy days, and very rainy days), it is concluded that the maximum number of rainy days (days with 0.1 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the Santo da Serra and Santana stations (19 days). The maximum number of rainy days (days with 1.0 mm of precipitation or more) was recorded at the São Jorge, Chão do Areeiro, Santana and Santo da Serra (6 days). Practically every station recorded a very rainy day (day with 10 mm of precipitation or more).

Relative Humidity

In February 2024, the average monthly values of relative air humidity ranged between 52% in Pico do Areeiro, and 91% in São Jorge. The minimum daily value of relative air humidity (2%) was recorded at the Quinta Grande station on the 7th, and the maximum value (100%) was reached in 10 stations, on different days of February. Wind 

In February 2024, among the stations with anemometers, the Chão do Areeiro station recorded the highest average wind speed (25.9 km/h), while the Monte/Quinta Jardins do Imperador station recorded the lowest average (5.3 km/h). The highest wind gust was recorded on the 8th at Chão do Areeiro (115 km/h).

Insolation 

The maximum and minimum insolation (number of hours of uncovered sunshine) in February was 189.3 hours at Funchal/ Observatory and 138.7 hours at Porto Santo, with normal values being 141.4 hours and 134 .5 hours, respectively.

1 - Daily data and cumulative values for the month refer to observations from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

2 - The 1971-2000 normals are used for the Porto Santo/Airport and Funchal/Observatory stations. For the remaining stations, the normals for the periods 1961-1990 are applied.
