In 2021
Egg production, slaughtered livestock and landed catch increased, while poultry meat decreased compared to the previous year
According to data collected by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), egg production has topped 23.1 million units, in 2021, a 16.4% increase compared to 2020. An inverse trend was noted in the production of poultry meat which amounted to 3,206 tonnes in 2021, down by 6.7% from 2020.
In turn, the weight of slaughtered livestock increased by 3.8% from the previous year, reaching 963.9 tonnes. This increase was recorded in both cattle and pigs slaughtered (+3.3% and +11.9%, respectively). It should be noted that the species that contributed the most to the total of slaughtered livestock was cattle (93.0% of the total).
As for fisheries, compared to 2020, the data on landed catches provided by the Regional Directorate of Fisheries (DRP) show an increase in volume (+6,7%) and a decrease in revenue from the first sale (-3,0%). The landed catch stood at 5.2 thousand tonnes, while revenue reached €14.1 million.
The increase in volume is mainly due to the 21.7% increase in landed catches of tuna and tuna-like species, with catches of blue jack mackerel and chub mackerel also increasing by 24.7% and 23.1%, respectively. Black scabbardfish registered a drop of 12.3% in catches compared to the previous year.
Tuna and tuna-like species were the most abundant species in 2021, totalling 2,808 tonnes (54.1% of the overall catch), followed by black scabbardfish, which reached a total of 1,874 tonnes (36.1%). Revenue from the first sale of tuna and tuna-like species went up by 0.5% to €6.8 million, while black scabbardfish dropped by 13.4% to € 5.5 million).
In 2021, the average price for the first sale of landed catch (excluding the unloaded fish destined for self-consumption) decreased by 8.7% to €2.75 (€3.02 in 2020), standing, in the case of black scabbardfish at €3.02 and at €2.43 for tuna and tuna-like species (€2.93 in 2020).
Record figures for aquaculture production
In 2021, the production of sea bream stood at 1,565.7 tonnes, up by 26.8%. In turn, sales topped 7.7 million euros, rising by 24.4% over the previous year. For both indicators, 2021 was a historic maximum, surpassing the previous record figures of 2020.
Broken down by market, the national market (mainland Portugal and the Azores) accounted for 90.2% of the sales value, and the regional market 9.7%.
