In the 1st quarter of 2022
Poultry meat, slaughtered livestock and landed catch registered a year-on-year growth, while egg production decreased
According to the data gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), in the first three months of 2022, the egg production stood at 5.5 million units, decreasing by 9.6% year-on-year.
In the same period, the poultry meat totalled 812.1 tonnes, increasing by 10.0% compared to the 1st quarter of 2021.
Between January and March 2022, the slaughtered livestock reported by the Slaughter Center of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (CARAM) reached 195.2 tonnes, up by 2.1% year-on-year.
As for fisheries, information collected from the Regional Directorate of Fisheries for the 1st quarter of 2022 shows that this period was characterised by a year-on-year increase in the landed catch, by 15.1%, and in the first sale value, by 17.6%. In the first three months of this year, the fish landed in the Region amounted to 800.2 tonnes, generating first sale revenues of 3.0 million euros.
Only tuna and tuna-like species fell in quantity (-33.3%), but blue jack mackerel (+412.2%), black scabbardfish (+28.5%) and chub mackerel (+ 25.2%) propelled the global growth. Regarding value, mackerel stood out (+266.5%), along with black scabbardfish (+36.5%) and chub mackerel (+20.5%), contributing to the positive change in revenue. The performance of tuna and tuna-like species (-5.8%) prevented the year-on-year growth in value from being greater. Despite the reduction, it should be noted that in this quarter 67.7% of catches were of black scabbardfish. In the reference period, the mean value of fish landed was 3.83 euros (3.73 euros in the same period of 2021), with the average price for tuna and similar reaching 7.73 euros (5.48 euros in the first quarter of 2021). In the case of the black scabbardfish, the mean value was 3.23 euros (3.02 euros in the first three months of the last year).

According to the information gathered by DREM from the aquaculture enterprises operating in the Region, in the 1st quarter of 2022, 509.7 tonnes of sea bream were produced, up by 51.3% year-on-year. The sales topped 2.4 million euros, rising by 52.6% over the same quarter.
By markets, the national market (mainland Portugal and the Azores) accounted for 89.4% of the sales value, and the regional market only for 10.6%. Exports for the EU were almost negligible (0.1%).
