Between January and September 2022
Egg production, livestock slaughtering and poultry meat increased year-on-year while landed catch registered a decrease, but its value rose
According to information gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from industrial poultry farms in the Region, between January and September of 2022, egg production stood at 18.4 million units, increasing by 8.1% year-on-year.
In turn, the poultry meat totalled 2,401.9 tonnes, increasing by 3.7% compared to the same period of 2021. For the period from July to September, there were changes compared to the same period of the previous year of +15.7% and -9.0%, for egg production and poultry meat, respectively.
Regarding livestock slaughtered, measured in tonnes, it grew by 13.1% year-on-year in the first three quarters of 2022, explained by the increase in the slaughtering of bovine animals (+15.0%). The year-on-year change in livestock slaughtered for the 3rd quarter was +22.6%.
In the domain of fisheries, the information collected from the Regional Directorate for Fisheries for the first nine months of 2022 shows that in this period there was a 10.2% year-on-year drop in the landed catch and an increase in the first sale value of 10.4%. During this period, the unloaded fish in the Region stood at 4 121.4 tonnes, which generated a first-sale revenue of 13.7 million euros.
Breaking down by main species, only black-scabbard fish (+27.3%) and chub mackerel (+73.6%) showed increases in quantities, with tuna and tuna-like species (-31.9%) and blue jack mackerel (-6.5%) determining the overall fall. In value, the black-scabbard fish increased (+40.4%%), along with chub mackerel (+53.9%) and blue jack mackerel (+2.8%), contributing to the abovementioned growth of revenue. Tuna and tuna-like species dropped by 7.9%, thus hindering the year-on-year growth in value from being higher. Despite the reduction, it should be noted that in this period 45.2% of the value of catches were related to tuna and tuna-like species.
In the reference period, the mean value of fish landed was 3.37 euros (2.73 euros in the same period of 2021), with the average price for tuna and similar reaching 3.31 euros (2.45 euros in the same period of 2020). In the case of the black scabbardfish, the mean value was 3.34 euros (3.02 euros in the first nine months of the last year). It should be mentioned that these ratios exclude the unloaded fish destined for self-consumption.

Aquaculture production grew
According to the information gathered by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) from the aquaculture production enterprises operating in the Region, between January to September of 2022, the output of sea bream was 1,303.8 tonnes, up by 17.7% year-on-year. In turn, sales topped 6.8 million euros, rising by 25.6%.
By markets, the national market (Mainland Portugal and the Azores) accounted for 88.5% of the sales value, and the regional market for 11.3%.
